Why We quit sugar & gluten

Hi! I am a Kiwi mother of 5. My husband I have been married 26 years, and have struggled with our weight all of that time. He blames me, and says I'm just too good a cook! Of our 5 children, both boys have moved out of home, leaving their 3 sisters, ages 16-22, still at home.
After watching That Sugar Film with my husband recently, and reading Wheat Belly and Trim Healthy Mama, we decided it's time we did something serious about improving our health and weight.
On this blog, I will share my only my personal information for now - I may add more info from the rest of the family down the track if they're happy to share. For now, just a few things - over the last few years, we have had to deal with a number of food allergy issues in the family. One of the girls has too much iron in her body. None of them are seriously overweight, but two of them will feel better if they lose some weight.
As for me, I have Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroid disease, am about 50kg overweight, suffer from chronic severe insomnia, and have joints that are starting to hurt more often.
The more I read and learn about refined sugars and gluten-containing grains, especially wheat, the more I am convinced they are just not good for us. I've known this for some time. Now it's time to take definite action!
I want to sleep at night! I want to lose weight, have a clearer mind and more energy, and I want all of my family to be healthier and happier.
