I've decided to post a wrap up of each week of our new lifestyle. A week ago, we gave up sugar and gluten, and already I've experienced two changes that I'm really happy about - I've lost weight, and my chronic insomnia is improving!
Last Monday I weighed 117.5 kg. This Monday I weighed 116.9, a loss of 600g or 1 lb 5 oz. I'm happy with that, especially as we had dessert twice, ate out once, and I wasn't particularly trying to keep carbs or calories down, and didn't exercise last week. Of course, that's just the beginning.
For years, I have had issues with insomnia, especially when stressed. For the past 6 months, I have basically had no good nights of sleep, except with the help of medicine. A common pattern for me would either be to sleep for 1-2 hours then wake about 2am and not go back to sleep until around 6, for an hour or so, if at all, or to have trouble falling asleep in the first place, and still be tossing and turning at 4 or 5 am. Very frustrating!
Since going off sugar and gluten, the first four days there was no change, but from day 5 onwards, my sleep has started to get better and better. Last night I woke a couple of times, but didn't lay awake for hours. At this rate, I might even be getting a proper 8 hours by the time another week has passed! This change alone is enough to make me want to shout Hallelujah and stick to our new regime!
Another change I'm hoping to see is relief from the monthly migraines I've had for the past 12-18 months (no prior history of migraines). It feels like some medieval torturer has my head clamped in a tight vice and is intent on spending 3 days stabbing my eye with a rusty screwdriver! I'm hoping the dietary changes will cause those to stop. Time will tell!
And these changes have not been difficult - I'm not going hungry, have had no real withdrawal symptoms apart from the minor strange headache of days 2&3, and the food tastes good!
So, in summary, in our first week of no sugar or gluten, we've eaten some really good food (and a couple of meals I won't bother to repeat), had no real difficulties, and I've lost weight and am getting more sleep. Yep, definitely sticking with this!
Next week, I plan to add in 2 new routines to the program......
